1871–1940 — Teacher of the spoken word
Florence Scovel Shinn was an illustrator before she was a teacher, and it shows in the writing: short scenes, named clients, a decree at the end of nearly every argument. She is the origin of the spoken affirmation as it is practised today.
Shinn trained as an artist at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and made her living for two decades as a magazine and children's-book illustrator in New York. She married the painter Everett Shinn, of the Ashcan school, in 1898; they divorced in 1912.
She began speaking to small metaphysical gatherings in New York and gradually built a practice as a teacher and what she called a practitioner — someone who works on a specific problem with a client through statement and prayer. When no publisher would take her first book she paid for it herself in 1925.
She had no church, no seminary title and no organisation. Her authority came from the case histories, which she used the way a physician uses notes: this woman said this sentence, stopped saying that one, and here is what followed.
Shinn's central claim is that speech is operative. A sentence said with conviction sets something in motion; a sentence muttered anxiously sets the opposite in motion. Her whole method follows from taking that seriously.
Almost every affirmation circulating online today is a descendant of Shinn's decrees, usually without the two conditions she attached. She insisted the word must be spoken from conviction rather than from want, and she insisted on following it with an act.
Her prose is also unusually honest about failure. Clients in her books refuse the instruction, repeat the fear, and get the outcome that matches — she leaves those cases in.
Read The Game of Life and How to Play It first, in full — it is short, and we host the complete text. Her later books largely restate it. Your Word Is Your Wand (1928) is essentially a working list of decrees for particular situations.
The dated material is visible and we have left it in place: the medical language, the class assumptions, the occasional certainty about other people's lives. Read it as a 1925 book and take the method.
Man can release, through his spoken word, all that belongs to him by divine right. He must, however, have perfect faith in his spoken word.

As the imaging faculty is the creative faculty, it is necessary for man to see the idea, before it can manifest.

That the spoken word is operative: a short, definite statement said with conviction sets things in motion, while anxious repetition works against you. She also taught non-resistance, forgiveness as a practical clearing, the Divine Design, and acting as though the outcome were already settled.
Yes. It was published in the United States in 1925 without a renewed copyright and is in the public domain. The complete text is in our Source Archive at no cost and with no email required.
A decree is spoken once with authority and followed by an act consistent with it. Modern affirmations are usually repeated many times a day, which Shinn treated as a sign of doubt rather than faith.
